FAQ
Why MIT?
Because you should not have to trust us to be safe from them. The companies on the other side of this have billions of dollars, the best engineers alive, and the largest computers ever built, and all of it is pointed at your attention. You have almost nothing pointed back.
Yawningface is meant to be that something, and a tool like that is only worth anything if it reaches everybody: read it, fork it, run it yourself, ship it inside your own thing. MIT is the shortest path to that. No permission to ask, no licence to negotiate, and no company that can be bought later and quietly turn the tool around on the people using it.
Why so cheap?
Because the attack is free. The algorithms cost you nothing, the content built to keep you scrolling costs you nothing, and a defence priced like software would simply be skipped by the people who need it most.
So blocking is not cheap, it is free: every device you own, no payment, and MIT if you would rather run the whole thing yourself. The twelve dollars a year is the cheap part, and it buys the one thing that costs us money every day it exists, which is the server that keeps your list on every screen at once. That is the complete answer to the problem, and it is priced where it is on purpose. Something that hands you back hundreds of hours a year should be an easy yes, not a decision.
